As Assistant Director of Transportation Design and CEI, I have the privilege of overseeing work that directly shapes communities, and few projects embody this better than the ongoing extension of the Chief Ladiga Trail in Anniston, Alabama. This initiative, which began construction in February 2024, is steadily transforming a vision into reality, and I’m proud that our team is helping bring it to life.
The new 6.5-mile extension connects the trailhead at Michael Tucker Park to the Anniston Multi-Modal Center. Along this route, we’re providing an 8-foot-wide bicycle path along a former railbed, which included replacing three aging timber rail bridges and removing another, to ensure safety and reliability for years to come.
We provided additional surveying, detailed design plans, and on-site construction inspection. Partnering closely with the City of Anniston, we’ve guided everything from contract documents and bidding to Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI). We also supported the re-evaluation of the environmental document, maintaining compliance with today’s regulatory standards while keeping community needs front and center.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been seeing progress unfold in ways residents can already enjoy. Milestones from the installation of the prefabricated bridge over Cane Creek, to the recent completion of asphalt surface from Michael Tucker Park toward Blue Mountain bring us closer to a safe and accessible trail that will expand recreational opportunities, foster healthier lifestyles, and strengthen connectivity across Anniston.
Once completed, this extension will enhance the Chief Ladiga Trail’s reputation as one of Alabama’s premier recreational corridors. It will not only serve residents but also attract visitors who want to experience Anniston’s unique blend of outdoor recreation and urban connection. At Sain Associates, we take great pride in contributing our expertise to projects that leave a lasting mark. The Chief Ladiga Trail expansion is more than just a path – it’s a shared investment in community, connectivity, and quality of life.
