Sometime in the mid-90s, Sain’s former president, Randy Sain, looked around a quiet room at the Sain Associates office. After seeing the group bent over engineering plans, their brows furrowed as they focused entirely on their work, Randy uttered a phrase that would change the company’s culture forever:
“We need to start having more fun around here – we need a Funtime Committee.”
Et voila – the Funtime Committee was born! At Sain, the Funtime Committee is responsible for planning various events throughout the year. These events include everything from birthday celebrations, wedding showers, baseball game outings, and the headlining event each year – the annual Christmas party. As Sain continues to grow, so does the Committee – currently, there are 13 members, each representing a different department or branch office within the company.
Having fun is only half the story, of course. It can be easy to underestimate the amount of work required to maintain the slate of morale-boosting events that we enjoy each year. I learned this lesson first-hand during my 2-year tenure as chairperson of the Funtime Committee from 2022 to 2023. As chairperson, I was responsible for planning meetings, delegating tasks, coordinating with external vendors, and managing budgets. In hindsight, the lessons I learned as Funtime Committee chairperson laid the groundwork for me to enter the world of project management earlier this year.

Nearly 30 years later, the company looks quite different, but our commitment to Randy Sain’s vision of investing in employee morale remains as strong as ever. Sain is an excellent place to work for many reasons, but in my opinion, the spirit of camaraderie we all enjoy is right at the top of the list, and the Funtime Committee is an integral part of maintaining that culture. I’m thankful to work for a company whose leaders prioritize the happiness of their employees as much as Sain does.
