Alabama’s infrastructure is getting a significant boost with the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation & Improvement Program II (ATRIP-II). As a follow-up to the original ATRIP initiative, ATRIP-II aims to address the continuing need for transportation infrastructure improvements across the state. Launched by Governor Ivey through the Rebuild Alabama Act, the ATRIP-II program is designed to enhance safety, connectivity, and economic growth by funding critical transportation projects. The Rebuild Alabama Act requires the annual ATRIP-II program to set aside a minimum of $30 million off the top of ALDOT’s share of new gas tax revenue for projects of local interest on the state highway system.
ATRIP-II focuses on several key areas:
- The rehabilitation and improvement of existing roadways
- Bridge repairs
- Upgrades to meet modern safety standards
One of the most crucial aspects of ATRIP-II is its emphasis on local involvement and decision-making. Counties and municipalities are encouraged to identify their most pressing transportation needs and submit applications for funding. By prioritizing projects that will have the greatest impact on local communities, ATRIP-II ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.
Sain Associates has worked on numerous ATRIP-II projects including a project in Jasper, Alabama. The Jasper ATRIP-II project streamlined access drives for Sonic, a fast-food restaurant, and an Urgent Care medical facility by merging them into a single driveway. It also aligned the location with the street across Highway 78, and median modifications were made to reduce conflict points. This project not only improves traffic flow, but it also enhances safety for drivers and pedestrians. Overall, this project is an asset to the community and contributes toward a more efficient and safer road network.
ATRIP-II represents a significant step forward in Alabama’s efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure. As these projects unfold, Alabamians can look forward to safer roads. From helping with the application to performing engineering and design during the project, Sain Associates is here to assist municipalities in their ATRIP II process.
