Sain’s First SS4A Safety Action Plan

The Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham (RPCGB) has successfully completed its Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Safety Action Plan (SAP). Sain Associates assisted the RPCGB with the SAP’s development through collaborative efforts with local stakeholders and public involvement. The primary goal of the SAP is to enhance transportation safety across the six-county Heart of Alabama region (Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, and Walker Counties) through the Safe System Approach.

The SAP’s strategic framework is designed to identify and address transportation safety challenges within the six-county area. By analyzing crash data, assessing roadway conditions, and engaging with community members, the plan outlines countermeasures to reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. The plan also proposes several key support strategies related to the community’s safety culture, planning and policies, leadership and commitment, and data collection and analysis.

The RPCGB and its member governments are committed to making substantial progress toward a goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The SAP has established a goal of achieving a five percent per year reduction in fatal and serious injuries by the year 2045.

The completion of the SAP marks a significant milestone in the RPCGB’s commitment. As these recommendations are implemented, continuous monitoring and community engagement will be essential to adapt and refine strategies.
