Chief Ladiga Trail: Alabama’s Premier Rail-To-Trail

Sain Associates was tapped in 2022 to help the City of Anniston design and plan for the Chief Ladiga Trail, a vital piece of Alabama’s outdoor recreation network. Named after a Muscogee (Creek) leader, Chief Ladiga, the trail honors Native American heritage while breathing new life into a former CSX railway corridor.

History

This transformation, initiated in the 1990s, reflects the collective efforts of local governments, conservationists, and community organizations to preserve the area’s natural beauty and historical significance. Today, the Chief Ladiga Trail is a shining example of the vision and the power of community-driven projects.

A Scenic Journey

The trail stretches 34 miles through northeast Alabama, winding through Cleburne and Calhoun counties, and connects Anniston, Jacksonville, Piedmont, and the Georgia border, meeting the Silver Comet Trail. These trails form one of the longest continuous paved paths in the United States with 95 miles of adventure for outdoor enthusiasts.

It offers a unique opportunity to experience Alabama’s diverse ecosystems with its lush woodlands, serene wetlands, and rolling farmland. In addition, there are breathtaking views that change with the seasons. Some of the features along the trail include:

  • Terrapin Creek: A popular spot for kayaking and fishing with scenic views from the trail,
  • Jacksonville State University: Cyclists and walkers can explore the bustling college town as they pass through,
  • Piedmont Welcome Center: A perfect spot to rest, refuel, and learn more about the area.
A Look Ahead: Expanding the Trail

The trail initially ended at Mike Tucker Park in northern Anniston, however, it is being extended 6.5 miles to reach the Amtrak station in downtown Anniston. The extension will be completed in early 2025 and will enhance the trail’s connectivity, making it more accessible for locals and visitors.

“I am excited to see its overall impact on the City of Anniston. The City has been working towards this for quite a while, and it should bring a positive impact to the area. When completed, it will attract visitors and outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country. Cyclists will even be able to ride their bikes from downtown Anniston almost to Truist Park in Atlanta to watch a Braves game.”

Tony Montanaro, Infrastructure Project Manager

In addition, there are plans to make the Anniston Amtrak station bike-friendly to ensure seamless transitions for cyclists traveling between trailheads and train routes.

Amtrak’s plans to restore a return train route to Atlanta and other cities along its line will provide a game-changing transportation option for cyclists and adventurers. The station’s proximity to the Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail and future Chief Ladiga trailheads makes it a hub for outdoor recreation.

These projects will catapult Anniston’s reputation as a destination for trail enthusiasts, offering unparalleled opportunities for exploration and connectivity. Sain Associates is excited to see what the future holds in bringing the trail to completion and the state’s vision to life.
