Sain Associates is honored to have won Excellence in Construction awards for our work at the Valley Hotel in Homewood, Alabama. The project received first place for Civil Engineering from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama and an Award of Excellence (Engineering) from the Associated Builders and Contractors of North Alabama.
Sain Associates was initially contacted by the developer, Homewood Place, LLC, and tasked with solving a problem previously deemed unsolvable – there was an existing sanitary sewer main running beneath the proposed hotel site. Due to the slope of the existing sewer main, it seemed that it could not be re-routed around the building without a pump station, making the project unfeasible. Our team reviewed the existing conditions with Jefferson County Environmental Services and collaborated to review multiple ideas for routing this line around the building.
After vetting several different design ideas, our team concluded that the most economical way to successfully re-route the sewer was to re-lay several off-site sewer lines adjacent to the site, which provided for proper slopes on the newly relocated sewer mains within the site. Once this first design obstacle had been resolved, the remainder of the project design fell into place very naturally.
BGKT Architects provided architectural services, and Robins & Morton was the General Contractor. Sain Associates worked for Mike Mouron, Chairman of Capstone Real Estate Investments and the Managing Member of Homewood Place, LLC. Our initial scope of services included conceptual civil engineering design to establish the overall development plan related to building placement on the site and utility relocation to accommodate the hotel building.
Once the conceptual design and site plan was finalized, Sain provided overall civil engineering consulting for the design and construction of the project. This included design of the Layout Plan, Grading Plan, Storm Drainage Plan with underground detention, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, Utility Plan with all utilities being relocated as necessary to serve the Hotel, Design Details, and Sitework Specification. During construction, Sain Associates provided engineering consulting to answer contractor questions and guide field adjustments for unknown utilities found at the job site.
We are proud to have been on the team that delivered a beautiful hotel in downtown Homewood, and we look forward to how we can partner with BGKT Architects and Robins & Morton in the future.
