June is National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month hosted by the National Safety Council. This month spotlights the importance of protecting workers, especially those in high-risk environments like construction zones and active civil engineering sites. At Sain Associates, safety is both a corporate policy and an important part of our culture. Whether we’re conducting a roadway design survey, performing a CE&I inspection, or walking a project site within the right-of-way, the risks are real and preventable. This month is a vital reminder to re-commit to proactive safety practices.

Why Work Zone Safety Matters

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 891 reported work zone fatalities in 2022. With heavy machinery, reduced visibility, and proximity to live traffic, one small mistake on the jobsite can have tragic consequences.

Creating a Culture of Safety

Building a strong safety culture involves creating an environment where every team member feels empowered and responsible. We encourage open communication at all levels of the organization, with an open-door policy to foster trust and comfort in speaking about potential hazards. This proactive mindset allows us to address concerns early, contributing to a safer workplace for everyone.

At Sain, our commitment to safety is reinforced through continuous investment in training. From lunch and learn presentations to site visit handbooks, we provide staff with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe on the job. In addition, we make a point to celebrate safety wins by recognizing what’s going well on our projects. Our annual quality control summits give each team a chance to reflect, share insights, and improve together.

This National Safety Month let’s reaffirm our commitment to safe practices in the field. Whether you’re behind the design or out walking the project site, every decision you make affects the safety of your team, your partners, and the public.
