Sain Associates conducted a review of the TN-162 at Hardin Valley Road interchange to develop recommendations to address extreme queuing from the surface street signalized intersection including exit ramp back-ups affecting traffic flow on the high speed facility of TN-162. The analysis pinpointed several operational and geometric design issues that result in a ramp queuing issue. Improvement recommendations were identified to include traffic signal timing and operational improvements and interchange/intersections geometric improvements. Multiple improvement scenarios were vetted using Highway Capacity Software (HCS) and Synchro traffic software to compare reductions in travel delay in combination with assessing the operational benefits through visual representation using software micro-simulation.
