Hagood Street and Dunston Avenue Drainage Improvements

Birmingham, AL

CLIENT: City of Birmingham

Sain Associates partnered with the City of Birmingham to develop design solutions for localized drainage issues at Hagood Street and Dunston Avenue. The project scope included preparation of construction drawings and specifications, supplemental topographic surveying, and construction coordination.

During a site visit with City staff, Sain reviewed the proposed plans to install an 18-inch storm pipe with associated inlets and manholes along the east side of Hagood Street. Together, the team walked the site to identify the approximate locations of each proposed structure and evaluate potential conflicts with existing sewer and water mains. Adjustments were made to the layout, including shifting inlet A6 northward to ensure placement at a low point for optimal drainage.

The site review also included the existing brick Type AF inlet at the south end of the project, where the new storm line would connect. The team determined that this structure would need to be partially demolished during pipe installation and subsequently rebuilt in brick to maintain functionality and match existing conditions.

In addition, the team investigated drainage concerns at 652 Hagood Street, where stormwater was flowing across the new sidewalk and ponding in the driveway before entering a yard inlet. To resolve the issue, the team recommended installing a new inlet upstream of the driveway and tying it into the existing system. This modification was incorporated into the design to improve overall system performance and reduce nuisance flooding.

Through proactive site coordination and responsive design adjustments, Sain Associates delivered a comprehensive drainage solution that addressed both the City’s system needs and the neighborhood’s localized concerns.
