Etowah County, AL
CLIENT: ALDOT North Region
FUNDING: Federal and State

This project includes engineering design services for ITS deployments located in the Gadsden area covering over 38 miles of roadway along segments of I-59, I-759, AL-77, AL-291, AL-759, US-411, and US-431. The design scope was based on functional and system requirements developed by ALDOT North Region. A combination of repurposed Federal funds and State funds are being used to support the project.
The project includes installation of wireless and fiber optic communications, hub cabinets, PTZ cameras, radar vehicle detection units, dynamic message signs, and traffic signal controllers. Due to the topography and distance from existing power in many areas of the project, multiple locations were designed to use solar power. All ITS sites will be connected to the ALDOT District Office in Gadsden via fiber optic cable or a wireless network, which will in turn provide connectivity to the ALDOT North Region Office in Huntsville. The wireless network design included a preliminary wireless propagation study we prepared to evaluate anticipated line of sight and potential RF interference for multiple frequencies.
Upgrades to traffic signal controllers along AL-77, AL-291, AL-759, US-411, and US-431 will provide the necessary equipment and communications to connect with the ALDOT North Region Traffic Management Center and will enable utilization of ALDOT’s Regional Traffic Operations Program (RTOP) to actively manage corridor operations.
