We are excited to spotlight Michael Thomas, PLS, recently named an Associate Shareholder of the firm. Michael’s career path, leadership within the surveying profession, and commitment to teamwork make him a valued member of Sain’s ownership group.
Michael’s journey with Sain Associates spans nearly two decades and reflects his deep connection to the firm. He first joined Sain in May 2005 as a rodman, gaining hands-on experience in the field early in his career. After time away, Michael returned to Sain in January of 2022, stepping into the role of Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) for the Birmingham office.
Since his return, Michael has played a key role in leading Sain’s surveying efforts, providing technical expertise, mentoring staff, and quality control across a wide range of projects.
Leadership Beyond the Office
Michael’s leadership extends well beyond Sain. He is actively involved in professional and civic organizations that support the surveying profession and local communities. He currently serves as President-Elect of the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors (ASPLS), where he helps guide the future of the profession across the state. In addition, Michael was recently appointed Chairman of the City of Jemison Planning Commission, further demonstrating his commitment to thoughtful planning and community involvement.
Life Outside of Work
Outside the office, Michael enjoys spending time outdoors and staying connected to the land—fitting for a surveyor at heart. His hobbies include raising cattle for farm-to-fork as well as fishing – pursuits that reflect his appreciation for hard work, sustainability, and time well spent outside.
