Bathymetric Survey at Sylacauga’s Marble Quarry

In our commitment to leveraging innovative technology, we recently completed a bathymetric survey at the inactive marble quarry in Sylacauga, Alabama. This project required adaptability and cutting-edge tools to gather underwater data accurately.

The Sylacauga marble quarry serves as an essential resource for the local and regional construction industry. As part of ongoing management and planning, our team was tasked with conducting a detailed bathymetric survey to assess the underwater topography and volume metrics of the quarry.

Central to the success of this project was our utilization of a state-of-the-art unmanned surface vessel (USV), specifically designed for bathymetric surveys. The tool offered several advantages:

  • Precision Mapping: The sonar system delivered high-definition measurements of the quarry’s underwater contours, identifying key features and irregularities.
  • Enhanced Safety: By deploying the USV, we minimized the need for personnel to operate in potentially hazardous environments.
  • Efficiency: The drone’s autonomous operation streamlined the survey process, significantly reducing project timelines without compromising accuracy.

Conducting a bathymetric survey in a quarry setting is not without its challenges. The environment of the Sylacauga Quarry required meticulous planning and execution. Our team addressed these challenges by calibrating the USV for variable depths, navigating complex terrain, and mitigating environmental factors.

As a result, the survey provided a comprehensive bathymetric map of the quarry’s underwater features. This information is now being used to calculate accurate material volumes for resource planning, assess structural integrity and identify areas requiring intervention, and support long-term operations.

Sain Associates continues to embrace innovative technology to meet complex project demands. By integrating drone technology with our expertise, we deliver data that empowers our clients to make informed decisions. We’re excited to see how this data will enhance the operations of the Sylacauga Quarry and look forward to more opportunities to showcase the transformative power of bathymetric surveying.
