When I first joined what is now the Geographic Information Systems Association of Alabama (GISAA) in the mid-2000s, the organization was known as the Alabama Chapter of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA). I started as a passive participant, but my involvement deepened in 2014 when I served as the Central Region representative. That experience opened the door to my first term as Vice President, President, and Past President from 2016 to 2018—and now, I’m honored to step into that same three-year cycle again.
Currently, I’m serving as Vice President, a role that allows me to support the President, learn the ins and outs of the organization’s operations, and prepare for the year ahead when I will assume the presidency. It’s a unique opportunity that blends preparation with service—and one that I take to heart both personally and professionally.
Connecting and Supporting GIS Professionals Statewide
Personally, this role allows me to build lasting friendships with GIS professionals throughout Alabama. Professionally, it gives me a platform to help strengthen the GIS community statewide. GISAA provides opportunities for growth and education and works to promote the use and benefits of GIS technology among both public and private entities.
Many GIS professionals in Alabama operate solo—serving as the only GIS resource in their organization. That can be isolating. GISAA exists to bring these individuals into a larger community, providing technical support, shared resources, and a sense of connection. No one should have to navigate complex challenges alone—and with GISAA, they don’t have to.
A Technology That’s Shaping the Future
GIS isn’t just about maps. Today, GIS technology helps government agencies and organizations at every level tackle some of our biggest challenges – everything from broadband expansion and environmental monitoring to public safety and socioeconomic planning. By visually analyzing and synthesizing data, GIS empowers decision-makers to identify problems and develop data-driven solutions that improve quality of life across the state.
What’s Ahead for GISAA
Looking forward, GISAA has a full calendar of valuable opportunities for professionals and students alike. Our signature event, the GIS Alabama Conference, takes place every November. We also offer year-round online and in-person workshops, most of which are free. These events provide critical training, networking, and collaboration opportunities.
GISAA also supports the next generation of professionals by awarding scholarships to students and young professionals in the field. Through our Slack channel, members share ideas, troubleshoot problems, and stay current on technology trends. I strongly encourage anyone working in GIS in Alabama to join. The knowledge sharing and support are invaluable.
Bringing Sain’s Spirit of Innovation to GISAA
My role at Sain Associates has given me a solid foundation for leadership within GISAA. At Sain, we’re constantly looking for innovative ways to serve our clients and communities, and that mindset translates directly into my work with GISAA. Sain encourages participation in professional organizations, and I’m grateful to be part of a company that supports its employees in contributing to the GIS community.
Ultimately, GISAA and Sain share a common goal: making a positive impact through the smart, effective use of technology. I’m proud to play a role in helping GIS professionals across Alabama grow, connect, and lead.
