Advancing Connectivity Through Sweet Trails Alabama

Communities across Alabama are increasingly recognizing the value of connected trail systems as investments in recreation, tourism, economic development, and quality of life. Sweet Trails Alabama is helping advance that vision through a statewide initiative to create a connected trail network linking all 67 counties and major destinations throughout the state.

Sain Associates is proud to support the initiative by providing planning, engineering, and public engagement services for the feasibility study of a proposed trail connection between Birmingham and Anniston. In partnership with Jacksonville State University, Alta Planning + Design, and MacNally Land Design, the study is evaluating opportunities for a future trail corridor that could strengthen regional and local connectivity and expand outdoor recreation opportunities across east-central Alabama.

The feasibility study is taking a comprehensive approach to evaluate potential trail corridors and identify opportunities and challenges that could influence future development. Key considerations include:

  • Topography and terrain conditions
  • Property ownership and right-of-way considerations
  • Existing bridges and culverts
  • Environmental factors
  • Construction costs and implementation opportunities
  • Existing plans and increased connectivity
  • Bicycle and pedestrian activity
  • Connections to local resources and points of interest
Why This Matters

Trail systems do more than provide recreational opportunities — they create connections between people, communities, and destinations. Projects like the proposed Birmingham-to-Anniston corridor have the potential to support local economies, encourage active transportation, improve access to outdoor spaces, and enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

As part of the broader Sweet Trails Alabama vision, this effort will help strengthen regional and local connectivity while creating new opportunities for tourism and community growth across the state.

Public involvement is also a key component of this effort. Community and stakeholder feedback will help guide recommendations, identify priorities, and ensure the proposed trail connection reflects the needs and interests of the communities it would serve.
