This fall, we’ve had the pleasure of mentoring two exceptional interns who brought fresh ideas, unique perspectives, and an unmatched enthusiasm to Sain Associates. Their contributions have not only enhanced our projects but have also demonstrated the potential of the next generation of engineering professionals. Today, we are highlighting their experiences and the impact they’ve made during their time with us.
Keaton Rypkema
School: Auburn University
Major: Civil Engineering
Career Goal: To become an expert in transportation safety
Keaton’s contributions to our Auburn/Opelika Branch Office this fall have focused on advancing transportation safety and efficiency.
His favorite project involved optimizing signal timings and coordination along Gateway Drive using Synchro traffic modeling software:
“Studying signal timings and seeing real-world travel time improvements have been incredibly rewarding.”
During his internship, Keaton also gained valuable insights into funding mechanisms for safety projects, including the SS4A (Safe Streets and Roads for All) program.
When he’s not busy improving transportation systems, Keaton enjoys hiking and watching sports. He’s a die-hard Auburn fan and proudly cheers on his team any chance he gets. “War Eagle!”
Walt Andrews
School: University of Alabama in Huntsville
Major: Civil Engineering
Career Goal: To master the skills required for designing sites and roadways and apply them effectively in future projects.
As part of our Huntsville Branch Office, Walt continued his summer internship through this fall. One of the highlights included working on the Swann Covered Bridge Trail project from start to finish.
“Working with Sain this fall has been a great experience. I am able to continue developing my career and skills while finishing my degree, which has been invaluable. Throughout this semester I have built up a wealth of knowledge and experience that I know will be of great help after graduation. One of my favorite projects that I have been working on this semester is the Swann Covered Bridge Trail since I have been involved with the project since the very beginning. I have enjoyed seeing the process of going from an early concept to a final product and look forward to experiencing the same with future projects.”
Outside of work, Walt’s hobbies include hiking, running, and mountain biking. He also plans backpacking trips to explore new trails.
Interns like Keaton and Walt remind us of the importance of mentoring the next generation of professionals. Their passion and dedication inspire us, and we’re excited to see where their talents take them in the future.
