We are excited to highlight our survey intern this summer, Ben Adams!
Ben is a student at the University of Alabama, majoring in Civil Engineering. We have loved having Ben at the Sain office this summer and are sad for the summer to come to an end! However, we are excited to see what the future holds for him.
We asked Ben a few questions to get to know him a little better:
Why did you want to intern at Sain?
I wanted to intern as much as possible throughout my college career in hopes that when I graduate I do not just have a degree but I have experience in a workplace setting, which I believe will help me effectively transition from school to work. I specifically wanted to intern at Sain because they have a wide variety of work that goes on out in the field and in the office, which would give me ample opportunities to learn.
What lessons have you learned during your internship?
I have learned a lot working at Sain, specifically in the surveying department. Surveying is an essential part of civil engineering and during my time at Sain I have learned how to do certain things within that field such as coding points on a Topography survey along with how to read the land to create a topography map. That digital map can be sent to engineers so that they can begin developing design plan.
Seeing how my everyday work relates to the design of a project is eye opening. All this to say my biggest lesson I have learned from working at Sain is that each job, as unnoticed as it seems, is important and needs to be done to the best of your ability.
What advice do you have for prospective interns?
Treat everything you do like a job and do it as best you can. The transition from school to work is tough and learning is a huge part of an internship. The biggest piece of advice I could give to anyone looking to intern is that you need to look at everything as a learning opportunity; from your interview until your last day at work, there are countless lessons and skills to be learned.
When Ben goes back to school this fall, he plans to incorporate what he has learned at Sain to his course work, as well as to his future career in engineering.
