In recent years, broadband has become a hot topic of conversation. Openly considered an essential infrastructure, providing access to broadband in rural areas is connected to economic development, lower unemployment rates, increased home values, and educational improvements. The first step to determining whether broadband projects in rural areas are viable is to conduct a Broadband Feasibility Study.
Over the past few years, Sain Associates has developed a comprehensive, map-based approach to evaluating broadband infrastructure that utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. The visual aspect of GIS makes it easier for a city or county to understand existing broadband conditions and evaluate potential solutions. Various map layers viewed simultaneously help describe the “bigger picture” of this complex problem. These maps may include existing infrastructure, population density, economic demographics, geographic terrain, and other elements that can impact decision making.
Sain Associates has a proven track record of providing expert guidance and technical expertise in broadband projects. In 2020, this approach was used by Elmore County to quickly respond to the needs of their Board of Education to provide localized broadband hotspots. As a result, students in rural areas could engage in remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recently, Shelby County contracted with Sain to perform a Broadband Feasibility Study to improve the County’s economic development and increase educational opportunities. The scope of this project includes a comprehensive report containing narratives, figures, maps, tables, and recommendations. Utilizing this report, the County will be able to make informed decisions, obtain grants, and develop partnerships with local internet providers.
The Broadband Feasibility Study is an important step in bridging the digital divide and providing equal access to information and resources for all residents. We encourage Shelby County residents to complete the County’s survey to help gather data and inform decision-making on potential broadband initiatives. Stay tuned for updates on the study and next steps to improve broadband access in Shelby County.
