Auburn Outer Loop Feasibility Study

AUBURN, ALABAMA

CLIENT: City of Auburn

In 2002, the City of Auburn completed the Auburn Outer Loop Corridor Feasibility Study, which identified proposed alignments and typical sections for a loop road that would begin on the western side of the City at US-280 near its intersection with the existing SR-147, traveling south connecting to I-85 at Cox Road.

Sain Associates was contracted in October 2022 to evaluate the western portion of the proposed outer loop alignment presented in the 2002 Feasibility Study. Our team performed GIS base mapping, crash data analysis, intersection and corridor capacity analysis, pre-NEPA environmental screening, and traffic volume forecasting. The traffic volume forecasting required using the Auburn-Opelika regional travel demand model to estimate the impact of a new roadway. Sain also recommended revisions to the alignment of new location roadway, a typical section for the proposed roadway, new intersection configurations, and phasing of construction.

The study identified warranted revisions to the previously studied alignments, typical sections, project phasing, and opinions of probable cost. Environmental challenges and other red flags were identified through the pre-NEPA environmental screening. The purpose and need for improvements was also developed and documented.

The final document serves as a planning resource for the City as it continues to grow and develop and a baseline for an environmental document should the project move forward to design.
