Project Spotlight: Redland Road / Firetower Road

We are excited to announce the Redland Road / Firetower Road Intersection project received an Honor Award in the Transportation Category (3rd Place) for 2023 from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Alabama. Sain was recognized at the state-level ACEC/Alabama Awards Gala this past Thursday at the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Mountain Brook, Alabama.

Luke McGinty, Chief Engineer for Elmore County, and Nathan Currie, Sain Infrastructure Team Leader / Associate, accepting ACEC Award from ACEC of Alabama President Brian Hynniman.

In 2012, Sain was contracted by Elmore County to review the Redland Road (CR-8) and Firetower Road/Dozier Road (CR-59) intersection. Crash data from 2009-2011 indicated 12 total crashes, with a predominance of angle crashes. Sain reviewed several build options for the intersection to improve both safety and operations.

Our team concluded that a roundabout was ideal for the intersection because of its crash history and traffic volume. The County approved the proposed roundabout and obtained funding from the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) to fund the design and construction of the project.

Design began in late 2016, and Sain progressed the design to obtain the necessary approvals from ALDOT and other agencies while coordinating with utility companies on impacts and relocations required of their facilities. Construction started in August 2021 and concluded in May 2022.

The Redland Road / Firetower Road Roundabout was a cornerstone project in Elmore County’s mission to reduce fatalities along a major commuter route and introduced the community to their first local roundabout. The roundabout was also the first to be reviewed and approved by ALDOT’s Local Transportation Bureau and will lead the way for many more to come. Elmore County is pleased to have this safer intersection in its community!
