As the Civil Practice Leader at Sain Associates, I am privileged to witness firsthand the impact that civil engineering has on the communities we serve. At the heart of our mission is a commitment to excellence in site engineering and design, and it is through this lens that we actively contribute to the positive transformation of our surroundings.
Purposeful Planning
Every community has a unique identity, and we believe that purposeful planning is the key to unlocking the full potential of any site. Our team takes pride in understanding the specific needs and aspirations of the communities we work with. Recently, we have been collaborating closely with the Trussville community and local stakeholders on the Glendale Farms project. Our goal is to ensure that our site engineering and design solutions align with the Trussville 2040 Plan for growth and sustainability.
Environmental Stewardship
We also recognize the delicate balance between site development and environmental stewardship. Our processes prioritize sustainable practices that minimize the impact on natural ecosystems. A few years ago, our team worked on the new Carvana distribution facility in Bessemer, Alabama. The site selected was located on an undeveloped greenspace with existing streams. To maintain the integrity of the site, we worked together to install bottomless culverts over the streams to avoid negative impacts on the area. The site development was also designed to maintain as much of the undeveloped greenspace as possible.
Historic Preservation
Projects like the Greyhound Bus Station and 2200 Magnolia Avenue South have been instrumental in preserving the history of downtown Birmingham, Alabama. These historical redevelopments required active engagement with residents, local businesses, and community leaders to ensure that our design solutions reflect the unique character of each area. Projects like these truly demonstrate how civil engineers can influence residents to take pride in their surroundings and engage with our local history.
Creative Problem Solving
As civil engineers, it is our role to solve a variety of problems and navigate around obstacles that hinder our proposed projects. We have engineered design solutions that made it possible to develop very beneficial projects, which would not have been possible without our creativity in design. We not only design for safety and sustainability, but we also keep costs and schedules in mind as we formulate our design solutions. I am fortunate to have such a rewarding role in serving our clients and society, and I am inspired by the positive community impact that our firm has built over the years. Our commitment to excellence, sustainability, and community collaboration has been essential to our site engineering and design work. We look forward to a future where thoughtful site engineering and design continue to shape thriving, resilient, and vibrant communities.
