Veterans Affairs Mental Health Clinic

BIRMINGHAM, AL

CONTRACTOR: Hoar Construction

DEVELOPER: US Federal Properties

ARCHITECT: Hoefer Welker

Sain Associates provided civil design, a traffic study, and surveying services for the $30 million Birmingham Veterans Affairs (VA) mental health clinic at 7901 Crestwood Boulevard. We partnered with Hoar Construction, U.S. Federal Properties, and Hoefer Wysocki Architects, now Hoefer Welker, on this pursuit. We also partnered with U.S. Federal Properties and Hoefer Welker on VA facilities in Mobile, Alabama; Montgomery, Alabama; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Jacksonville, Florida.

This facility was constructed on the former Birmingham Garden Inn site and was one of several projects developed to revitalize the area. The nearly 60,000 square-foot clinic at this location is expected to serve about 25,000 veterans a year with services that are not currently available at the downtown facility. These include suicide prevention, outpatient general mental health, peer support, outpatient post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, and homeless programs.

Our biggest challenge was determining the layout to meet the 450 parking spaces required from the VA on this tight site. To obtain the necessary number of parking spaces, we designed a new sanitary sewer main in Montclair Road, utilized modular retaining walls on three sides of the site, and designed an underground detention system that met the City of Birmingham’s requirements.

Our team was excited to be part of a project that will serve veterans in the Birmingham metropolitan area for many years to come.
