Sain Associates was selected by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to prepare plans for the construction of an adaptive traffic signal system for US-280 from US-31 to Doug Baker Boulevard, a total of 25 signalized intersections. We performed a Systems Engineering Analysis to determine the desired functionality and high-level design of the system. The plan assembly included controller upgrades, vehicle detection reconfiguration, and fiber optic communication throughout the corridor, to an adjacent Fire Station, and back to the ALDOT Birmingham Area Office Traffic Management Center. We were also involved in post-construction with implementation and fine-tuning system parameters to optimize traffic progression and determine effectiveness. This project was one of three concurrent adaptive signal system projects, the first to be implemented in Alabama. Traffic progression along the US-280 corridor was improved tremendously by the implementation of the adaptive signal control system. After the adaptive signal control came online, an ALDOT-sponsored access management project was implemented that further improved traffic progression along US-280.
