Jeff Stephenson, P.E., is the Team Leader of Traffic Engineering at Sain Associates. He learned about Sain through an advertisement for an entry-level position as he was finishing his college degree. Jeff enjoys the work environment at Sain and providing services in an industry that has an impact on so many people. His favorite project is the first traffic signal he designed on his own, which can be found at the intersection of the Galleria Ring Road and the Hyatt Regency in Hoover. In a Q&A session we got to know Jeff a little better…
Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: I was born in Florence, AL and raised in Russellville, AL. I played soccer growing up from age 5 to 15. My dad was the coach most of the time. I graduated from Russellville High School in 1992 and graduated from The University of Alabama in 1998 with Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees in Civil Engineering.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your family.
A: I have been married to Jamie for over 19 years. We met at the University of Alabama. She is an excellent wife and mother, and she inspires me every single day. After living in Tuscaloosa and Hoover for a short time, we settled in Pelham, AL in 2002 and have lived there ever since. We have a fourteen-year-old daughter, Sydney. She competes in cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track for Pelham High School. We have a nine-year-old son, Blake. He plays football and basketball. We also have a five- year-old Shar Pei named Bear whom we “adopted” from a very nice military family back in April of this year.
Q: Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.
A: In my much younger days, I blew most of my spending money on hi-fi car audio components (stereos, speakers, amps, etc.). I still enjoy music and quality audio to this day, just not “quite” as loud.
Q: What are the three words that best describe you:
A: Level-headed, patient, understanding
Q: What would you consider to be your top 3 life highlights?
A: Getting to go home every day to a loving wife and two great kids, graduating from The University of Alabama, and working for Sain Associates straight out of college for nearly 20 years.
Q: What are your hopes for our industry?
A: Traffic experiences are a common ground for many people. Technology in the world of traffic engineering and the automobile industry continues to emerge and evolve and traffic as we know it will most likely be very different in the years and decades to come. My hope is that the technology and industry practitioners are able to continue to work together to develop and maintain safe and efficient transportation systems.
Q: What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
A: Seeing the members of our team succeed both personally and professionally.
Q: What book did you read last?
A: Great by Choice by Jim Collins
Q: What did you want to be when growing up?
A: A road builder or map maker – not too far off!
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I enjoy spending time with the family and volunteering with the kids’ activities at church. I listen to music when I need to unwind.
Q: What is your favorite sport? Team?
A: Football and The University of Alabama Crimson Tide!
Q: What is your hidden talent?
A: I’ve always loved music. I have some limited abilities on a few musical instruments – piano, acoustic guitar, and drums mainly. Sometimes I can play well enough to where someone can actually identify the song I’m trying to play!
