Sain Associates was called upon by the Dunnavant Square Cooperative District to review the feasibility of installing an underground tunnel at Dunnavant Square. Dunnavant Square is a mixed-use development located across from the Town of Mt. Laurel, Alabama. Mt. Laurel is a master-planned New Urbanist community with a mix of residential and commercial uses. The community boasts an active lifestyle and values a multi-modal connected street network. Introducing a new commercial development across busy County Road 41 with no accommodations for a safe crossing posed a problem. To maintain traffic flow and address pedestrian safety, our design team proposed an underground pedestrian tunnel.

Installing a tunnel under the highway involved many design challenges, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, storm drainage, lighting, utility relocations, and aesthetic concerns. During the construction of the tunnel, traffic flow was maintained along CR-41 through a diversion route. The landscape and hardscape materials were selected to blend with the natural surroundings and architecture of the Mt. Laurel community.

Since its opening in September 2018, the Dunnavant Square pedestrian tunnel has been enthusiastically used by community residents and visitors. It beautifully accomplishes the project goal of providing safe accommodation for pedestrians, bicycles, and golf carts to cross CR-41 and improves connectivity in the greater Mt. Laurel community.
