Serving Others through Operation Christmas Child

We decided to participate in Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child (OCC) this year for our company Christmas service project. It’s a great cause, and being able to help children from all over the world during this holiday season is so important to us.

Since 1993, more than 100 million children in over 130 countries have received shoebox gifts from OCC, an organization that works with local churches and ministry partners from around the world.

These kids need everyday items like toothbrushes and shampoo – things we take for granted every day.  We thought being able to help provide for their basic needs was important but we also enjoyed picking out toys and games for donation as well.

The Christmas season is so special for children. They are full of joy and hope.  You just can’t beat being able to put a smile on their face of a child through something as small as a shoebox. Sharing the Christmas spirit with little ones and being able to light up their faces is one of the best joys of Christmas, and it is a blessing to be able to contribute to that.

Everyone at Sain Associates went above and beyond the goal we set to put together 18 boxes. We ended up putting together 31 boxes – 16 for girls and 15 for boys. Most of our employees donated items for us to use over a two week period.

OCC makes suggestions for what to put in the boxes, but we had our own set of requirements for each box to make sure the type of items were well-balanced, including school supplies, toys, toothbrush/toothpaste and body wash. We also put $7 in each box to help pay for postage in shipping the boxes globally.

A small group of employees was part of the build team and did an excellent job putting our boxes together. We had a pizza party and listened to Christmas music while packing boxes to celebrate the occasion! We packed all the boxes in about 45 minutes and dropped them off the next day at a local church. After they head off to their final destinations, we will be able to see where our boxes go, so we’re excited to see where our boxes were shipped.

This was a great Christmas service project for us.  It challenged us to donate unselfishly and gave us an opportunity to bond together while building something for others. I could not be more proud to be part of something bigger than ourselves.
