Once a month a small group of representatives from each department at Sain, including branch locations, comes together to discuss a very important topic: fun. As the Sain Associates Funtime Committee, we are charged with planning social events and service activities that promote team-building and camaraderie to help make Sain a great place to work.
The Funtime Committee was created when Randy Sain, our second company president, was at the helm. Randy loved to have fun at the office and thought a special committee tasked with creating fun was a great idea. The idea stuck and more than 10 years later we still have a Funtime Committee.
For 2017, the committee has identified a company activity for each month of the year. These activities range from small socials like eating King Cake on Mardi Gras, to larger events like picnicking at a Birmingham Barons baseball game. This year we’ve even added some new adventures like canoeing and zip lining to get us out of the office and out of our comfort zones. We’ve also planned some service projects so employees can work together to benefit others in the community. Our first service activity of the year will be the Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event on February 13 at Canterbury United Methodist Church. The committee’s goal is to provide a wide variety of activities so that everyone can find something that appeals to their personal interests.
The Funtime Committee may seem silly to some, but it provides a democratic process to planning company events and service projects. These activities are better attended when they reflect the interests of our employees, and thus have a greater impact on our organization as a whole. We could all use a little more funtime in the workplace.
