In August, 2012, Sain Associates celebrates its 40th anniversary! What started as a small company in 1972, has grown and changed significantly over the years. We thought it would be fun to go back through each of our four decades and reminisce about what has made Sain such a great company over the years AND look toward the future. Read about the 70s and 80s.
The early 1990s ushered in a new vision and motto for Sain: “A Great Place to Work.” Randy Sain, who was still president during this decade, had a vision of growing the firm by attracting high quality employees who would stay for the long term.
To turn this vision into a reality, the firm encouraged many social activities among employees and focused on becoming a family friendly company. We had our first “Bring Your Child to Work Day,” which was a lunchtime cook-out in the parking lot. Everyone’s family was invited! We continue to host a parking lot picnic every year during one of the warmer months.
Our hard work on family friendly policies paid off in 1999 when Sain won a Best of the Best Companies for Working Families award from Birmingham Family Times magazine.
We continued to be recognized in subsequent years by Birmingham Parent magazine and the Birmingham Business Journal. Our programs got even more attention in 2002 when the Society of Women Engineers awarded their inaugural Work Life Balance Award to Becky White.
Perhaps that work life balance was aided by our new email capabilities during this decade. As with many other firms, email revolutionized our project schedules, documentation and time priorities. PCs had also become the standard way of doing business by this time.
While most of our engineering work was being done in CADD during this decade, many staff members were still more comfortable with manual drafting. They kept their drafting tools nearby, just in case.
Cell phones around the office were also starting to become a more common site as they got smaller and more affordable. Throughout the 90s, they gradually became a standard office tool for executives and project managers who traveled for business. Of course, all they could do was talk. No email or internet yet! There were a few years during this decade when we designed sites for cell phone towers since this business was so hot as the cell industry expanded.
Sain also continued to work with Wal-Mart throughout the eastern U.S. during the 1990s.
Transportation services were added at the end of 1992 with the hiring of Jim Meads and Becky White. During the next decade, Sain built a robust client list with traffic engineering, transportation planning and roadway design services. We were fortunate to obtain a continuing service on-call contract with Alabama DOT for traffic engineering services (ALDOT’s first on-call contract) in 1993. In 1997, Sain was awarded a Planning contract with Tennessee DOT and soon after hired Richard Holt to establish an office in Pulaski, Tennessee. Those contracts have been continuously renewed since first awarded, which is something we are really proud of!
