Construction, Engineering and Inspection (CE&I) is an area that we are doing more and more work in. To ensure that we’re providing the absolute best services in CE&I, we have recently focused on expanding our staff to add even more expertise. Project Manager, Matt Stoops, and Inspector/Designer, Shawn Calhoun, joined Sain this summer.
Matt is originally from Iowa but moved to Texas at an early age. After earning his degree from the University of Texas in Austin, he spent more than 10 years working for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). During that time he did design and construction work on a variety of large projects, such as a four-mile reconstruction of I-45 to expand it from four lanes to eight. This involved right-of-way, detention ponds, seven bridges, braided ramps, utility relocations and a complicated construction sequence. Matt later became the responsible engineer at a TxDOT rural office overseeing design and construction, and he then transferred to Fort Worth to be the project engineer on a freeway interchange construction project, which involved a team of seven inspectors working a $121M construction contract.
This construction background will help open more doors for Sain when it comes to CE&I work, and Matt’s experience will be helpful during the design process when it comes to identifying sources of problems in constructability or in plan/contract conflict issues.
Shawn is working in our Infrastructure Department doing construction inspection and roadway design. He has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama. He was previously employed by Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and has experience with roadway inspection work on state projects. Shawn has also worked as a contractor, both for himself and for various construction companies. This experience has given him a different perspective on design work and helps Shawn address potential constructability issues early in the design process.
Originally from Centreville, Alabama, Shawn is married and has an eight-year-old son, a basset hound, and a farm full of other pets.
Matt and his wife have a high energy blue heeler mix they teach new tricks to when they have free time from their busy careers. Matt’s wife is in her 3rd year of residency at Children’s of Alabama.
Shawn and Matt are both fitting in great at Sain and enjoying all of our social events where we’re able to get to know them better and build our team and community atmosphere.
