The world looks different today than it did yesterday. As we face the unknown of the coronavirus, Sain Associates will continue to bring weekly content to the blog. We find comfort in providing uplifting news but also bringing a sense of routine while we navigate through this fluid environment.

We are very proud of our transportation planning work for the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Bridge Replacement project in Birmingham, Alabama. Earlier this year, we received the 1st place (Grand) state award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Alabama for the Engineering Excellence Awards. We’re excited to add a National Recognition Award from ACEC to the list.

In years prior, ACEC hosted black-tie award galas in Washington D.C. to honor Engineering Excellence Awards recipients. However, with the pandemic, hosting a largely attended event was out of the question for 2020.

When it comes to celebration, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and COVID-19 wasn’t going to stop ACEC from having their annual awards event. On Tuesday, December 1st, ACEC hosted its first-ever virtual gala to celebrate the award recipients. The virtual gala included an awards program emceed by comedian and television host Ross Shafer. ACEC’s virtual format proved that a pandemic was not going to stop a party!

We invited a few of our clients to participate in this year’s gala. Gary Smith and DeJarvis Leonard with ALDOT attended the viewing party in person at our office. James Fowler with the City of Birmingham and Ed Austin with ALDOT participated virtually.

Winning an ACEC National Recognition Award is a tremendous achievement for our firm, and we are proud of our staff. Being given the opportunity to have such a critical planning and implementation role with this project was a privilege. The I-59/20 CBD project is one that we will talk about for years to come.
