Did you know it is National Surveyors Week? Celebrated annually since 1984, National Surveyors Week is a time to recognize the contributions that surveyors have made to our community and society. It is also a week to honor the accomplishments of professional surveyors throughout American history, which includes iconic individuals like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Boone, and Henry David Thoreau.

According to the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), the annual number of retiring surveyors far exceeds the number of those entering the surveying profession. An industry’s future success is dependent on many factors, but one critical component is the ability to refresh a workforce. The starting point for sustaining an industry is education, where the next generation can gain a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. Sain Associates has been fortunate to volunteer with the Academy of Craft Training and local colleges to share the importance of surveying. We hope that we can give students a better understanding of the surveying profession, and, in turn, they can envision a role as a surveyor.

There are several ways to participate in National Surveyors Week. Below are a few ideas:

  • Sponsor a Trig-Star Test: Trig-Star is an annual competition for high school trigonometry students. The competition connects what students are learning in the classroom with a profession that requires those skills. Visit for more information.
  • Conduct a Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Event: Helping a Scout earn a surveying merit badge has never been easier. Start by visiting the Boy Scouts of America website to download the current badge requirements. Then visit the NSPS website for step-by-step instructions on how to complete the requirements and tutorials.
  • Organize Benchmark Hunting: Using your GPS unit or written directions provided by NGS, you can seek out NGS survey markers and other items that have been marked in the United States. You probably walk by at least one every day at the top of a peak or in a village square!

We are hopeful that with celebrations like National Surveyors Week and organizations like the NSPS and the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors (ASPLS), awareness will rise for the need of future surveyors. We appreciate all the work these organizations do, and we are lucky to have talented surveyors on our team.
