Introduce a Girl To Engineering Day, also known as Girl Day, is a worldwide campaign dedicated to help unite, mobilize, and support the engineering and technology volunteer communities. The purpose of the event is to introduce girls to strong female leaders, help develop their understanding of engineering and inspire engineering or technical occupations.
At Sain, we have several experienced female engineers on our staff, but engineering is still not a typical path for females. Since we are always excited to talk to young women about our passion for engineering, we believe strongly in the value of Girl Day. This year is our fourth time to participate in Girl Day activities.
For the last three years, Sain hosted female students from an area high school at our office, but this year we decided to dream bigger. We partnered with McWane Science Center, other engineering-related businesses and two professional organizations to host a much larger Girl Day event. Over 100 female students from local high schools came to the McWane Center on February 8th to learn about engineering through demonstrations, educational instruction, and dialogue with professional engineers. The students were from Hewitt-Trussville high school, Pell City High School, Shades Valley High School, Spain Park High School, and Alabama STEM Education. Women engineers from 16 companies volunteered their time to show the students a sampling of the work they perform on a daily basis.
The highlight of the event was a screening of the Dream Big movie in McWane’s IMAX Theater. Dream Big was created in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers and is aimed at bringing engineering into the forefront of our culture. The movie celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people around the world. All the girls and volunteers agreed the Dream Big movie was inspirational and very entertaining.
