For many months, Sain Associates provided civil engineering design services to the City of Birmingham’s Cahaba Road transportation enhancement project that was completed and opened last summer. The project included a new roundabout, landscaping and elements to better tie together the Birmingham Zoo to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Due to the hard work of many, the project was a great success that has received a lot of positive feedback.

For Sain Associates’ role, we are honored to have been recognized in the 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition (EEA) with a State Award for the Small Project Category by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). This second place award recognizes Sain for engineering achievement that demonstrates the highest degree of innovative design, engineering merit and ingenuity.

Sain served as overall project manager, engineer of record, primary design engineer and construction engineering inspector for the project.  We also assembled and led a multi-disciplined team of sub-consultants to provide related services including surveying, environmental coordination, landscaping and lighting. Project partners included Nimrod Long and Associates and Hyde Engineering.

At last year’s ribbon cutting ceremony for the project, Mayor William Bell praised the improvements to Cahaba Road saying, “This project connects two great attractions, making them one ultimate destination. This work symbolizes a great partnership between the City of Birmingham, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Birmingham Zoo.”

We are very proud of our work on Cahaba Road, thankful for our recent award and excited to see more great results from the project in 2016.
