The era of employment for life is long over. Many people now migrate from job to job over their career in search of greater fulfillment and compensation. Society largely encourages this “job-hopping” to the extent that the average person changes jobs 10-15 times during his/her career. However, here at Sain we take pride in the fact that we have a number of employees that have a long tenure with us. My brother, Joe Meads, is one of those. This month Joe celebrates 30 years with Sain!
Joe is one of four owners of Sain Associates, a Birmingham-based civil engineering company. He has more than 30 years’ experience as a civil engineer and is a registered Professional Engineer in multiple southeast states. Joe is Principal-In-Charge of many of Sain’s municipal/government projects and specializes in industrial/economic development projects.
Joe is President of the Board of Directors for the Irondale Chamber, Vice Chair of Governmental Affairs and President-Elect for the Greater Shelby Chamber, Board Member of the North Central Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Chair of Associates Advisory Council for the Economic Development Association of Alabama.
Joe started his career at Sain South, back when we had two companies. Sain South and Sain Associates later merged. Joe was one of the first Professional Engineers in the company besides the initial owners. Some of his first projects were sewer projects with Jefferson County, Wal-Mart projects in rural Pennsylvania, Jefferson County Industrial Parks – JeffMet McCalla and JeffMet Lakeshore, a track for Harley Davidson in Talladega County, and a medium security prison in Bibb County. In 1992, Joe started a branch office in Anniston, Alabama. He worked on our first project with ALDOT which was SR-35 in Rainsville. Joe has assisted the City of Prattville and CAEC many times over the last 20 years building strong relationships that continue to benefit our company today. Halfway through his career, Joe transitioned into the Business Development role here at Sain. Having a Professional Engineer in this position has been a tremendous asset to our clients and our firm.
When asked about his 30 years, Joe said, “It seems like yesterday I was one of the young engineers and now I’m the 2nd longest tenured employee. I’m proud of the changes of culture at Sain over my 30 years here. It has changed from a “sweat shop” environment (If you worked in “the swamp” in the old Benson building in Homewood you would know what I mean!) to a family-friendly company. Hack Sain had the foresight to diversify our company enabling us to survive the economic downturn.”
We’ve seen many improvements in our industry with technology. Joe said, “Many of my early projects with Sain were in the Phenix City area. I recall having to locate all the payphones between there and the office to check in when on the road. Now I am accessible to staff and clients pretty much all the time…with the exception of a few trips like fishing in the Amazon!”
Joe went on to say, “I have been blessed with relationships of many friends who are great clients and terrific people to work with. Business is all about relationships, and I’ve always tried to help others to be successful. It is a blessing to work with my fellow owners, Jim Meads, Becky White, and Vann Rutledge, and a great staff. I am most thankful to God for directing my path to be at Sain Associates and for sustaining us through the great times and difficult times.”
We hope all of our friends and family will join us in wishing Joe a Happy 30th Sain-iversary!
